When he came out of the water, she was asleep.
Thank god for that, thought David fleetingly. If he had seen her still waiting near that bonfire, with the light of the fire gilding her skin, that chaste bra, which on her looked like the finest lingerie, and those tiny shorts that showed off her beautiful legs, he wouldnât have answered for his actions.
Not that watching her sleep was much better...
She was curled up on her side, her face turned towards the sea, the almost empty bottle of Johnnie Walker beside her and her hair loose on her shoulders. She had a smile on her lips, probably induced by the drink, and she was using her hand as a pillow. Not even the purple shadow of the bruise on her side or that slightly swollen ankle could compromise her perfection.
Jeanne was dozing beside her. On hearing him approach, she opened one eye and looked at him, testing his mood. Still outraged, David grimaced at her.
âYou and I will talk later.â
He returned his gaze to Heaven. He was dying to wake her up and pick up where they had left off, but she was right, it was a bad idea. He had decided never to let a woman into his life again and he intended to keep that promise. Especially with her.
Heaven Taylor was dangerous, and grew more dangerous with every hour they spent together; she managed to creep into the folds of his soul and make a nest there. She was the kind of girl you had a serious relationship with, not a one-night stand. He had always known that, even when he had walked off leaving her standing in her bathrobe in front of her house, convinced that he had only used her.
He shook his head, still struggling to believe what she had confided to him that night â it had been a revelation that had clarified his ideas about the girl she had been. Had her boyfriend really made her believe she was frigid? She was the absolute opposite of frigid â she had an innate sensuality that wasnât vulgar but full of sweetness and naivety; an explosive mix, which made you want to teach her everything and, at the same time, discover in her arms a new way of loving, more total and satisfying. Because with her, it would have been something that lasted.
And wasnât you relationship with Victoria something that lasted too? he thought bitterly. Six years, only to get dumped right there in front of everyone.
You could never know at the beginning what a relationship held in store, even when the girl in question seemed to be the right one. There was always the chance that things would take a sharp turn in another direction.
A resigned look on his face, he turned away from her and returned to his post near the palm tree, where he had dropped his sketchbook. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he picked it up and began to draw, his mind soul concentrated on a single thought.
